Bathroom Remodeling: Where to Spend and Where to Save

In a bathroom, the money that matters most is spent on things you will never see again once the tile goes up.

Bathrooms are the smallest rooms we remodel and the least forgiving. Everything happens in a confined, wet space, and the parts that determine whether the room lasts twenty years are all hidden behind the finishes. Here is how to allocate a budget accordingly.

Spend: waterproofing behind the tile

Tile is not waterproof and grout is not waterproof. Water passes through both. What stops it reaching your framing is the membrane system behind the tile, and that is where the money should go first.

A proper membrane over cement backer board costs more than tiling straight to green board. It is also the difference between a shower that lasts twenty years and one that rots the subfloor in six — and by the time you can see that failure, the entire shower has to come out.

Spend: getting the shower pan slope right

A shower floor has to slope evenly to the drain from every direction. Get it wrong and water pools, grout stays wet, and mildew becomes permanent.

This is skilled labour, not a material cost, and it is not somewhere to accept the cheapest bid.

Spend: ventilation that actually vents outside

A surprising number of bathroom fans vent into the attic rather than through the roof or wall. That relocates the moisture problem rather than solving it.

An appropriately sized fan, ducted properly to the exterior, protects everything else you just paid for. It is one of the cheapest line items with the largest effect.

Save: tile choice and layout

Large-format porcelain in a simple stacked or offset layout looks current, installs efficiently and costs far less than intricate mosaic patterns or natural stone that needs sealing.

Use an accent tile in a small area — a niche, a single band — where it reads as deliberate. The visual payoff is nearly identical at a fraction of the material and labour cost.

  • Large-format porcelain over small mosaics
  • Accent tile confined to a niche or single band
  • Keep plumbing fixtures in their existing locations where possible
  • Stock vanity with an upgraded top instead of full custom
  • Refinish a sound tub rather than replacing it

Save: keep the plumbing where it is

Moving a toilet or shower drain means opening the floor and re-running waste lines, which adds significant labour and, in older homes, uncovers more work.

If the existing layout is workable, keeping fixtures in place frees a large share of budget for the waterproofing and finishes that you will actually notice.
